Summer is about to end. It's flown by for me. I'm starting to get into the groove of babysitting my 10-month-old granddaughter. Just two days ago she fell asleep in my arms. That was a very special moment for me.

Many fascinating things have happened in the past few weeks. Each day my granddaughter exposes me to things I missed when my kids grew up. I was busy six days a week building houses while Kathy got to see all the magic, as well as deal with most/all the fussiness and frustration.

Then there are the other things that are swirling around me. I'm the head usher at my church, Sacred Heart Church in Laconia, NH.

Over the years, I've come to know many of the regulars that come to mass. Some are shy, while others are outgoing. It's a fascinating cross section of humanity.

I feel my job each morning is to make the parishioners happy as they enter church. It's not unlike what I did when I was a conductor on the scenic train here in Meredith, NH.

If it's a windy day, I'll say to each woman that walks in the door, "Your hair has never looked more beautiful!", as they try to fluff it back into place.

All appreciate my sentiment, but several who have a sharp wit respond, "This isn't the ideal place to be mendacious, Tim!" They know who I am because my fancy Knights of Columbus name tag is on my navy blazer.

Each woman receives my trademarked, young lady greeting. Families with moms and daughter(s) get my special, "Good morning young lady, younger lady, and youngest lady" greeting. That puts huge grins on their faces.

The men are bestowed my, "Good morning, Commander." greeting.

One of the regulars is a retired grade-school counselor. I found out about her occupation about a year ago, and filed that away in my tiny gray cells thinking it might come in handy.

This past Sunday I greeted her with my normal, "Good morning, young lady!" She grinned and replied, "Good morning, young man." I'm almost old enough to be her father, so the "young man" reference is a stretch.

I then asked her, "May I ask what grades you worked with?" She replied, "First through fifth grade. Why do you ask?"

"I wonder if you can do me a favor. I'm in the early phases of writing a children's book. The inspiration came to me while I was driving my granddaughter around the rural roads near my home. It's one way to get her to fall asleep."

I continued, "My target audience is the age group that would enjoy the Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel book. I was wondering if you could read through the first draft to see what I can do to make it better."

She didn't answer right away. Instead, she pulled her phone from her purse, tapped the screen, scrolled, then showed me this image.

"I'd be delighted to offer input. Here's a book I wrote after one of my students came to me and said, 'My mom died, but I don't know what that means.' "

Gulp...

This woman has a B A degree in Psychology, and a Master's degree in Counseling. She an expert at offering advice to small children with tender minds.

Assuming you're reading this today, Sunday August 17th, I'll have my hands on a copy of her Becoming An Angel book by 10:30 am. 

I'll read it, and get back with you in case you have kids of your own or grandkids you feel would enjoy it. Without seeing or reading it and knowing this retired counselor, I'm sure the book is fantastic.

The author is a wonderful woman, and I've volunteered to help her get more exposure for her book in return for some tips on how to massage my writing to appeal to my target age group.

Isn't it so very interesting how you see someone each week for several years, casually exchange "Good mornings", but you have no idea who they really are, their interests, and what they've achieved in life.

Trust me, you'll be the first to be exposed to my new book once I've completed it. I think you're going to love the title, the story, and the illustrations.
