Stain Solver Obituary
You may have reached out to me in the past few days about a surprise email you received from the owners of Stain Solver. I can't begin to share how many subscribers contacted me asking if it was a scam or if
it was true. You may be one that thinks Kathy and I still own the company.
Yes, the announcement was true. The current owners of Stain Solver decided to fold up their tent and go out of business. Kathy and I SOLD the business to the new owners thirty months ago.
The shocking news made me very sad. It was like losing a family member.
Do you need more Stain Solver? I have some very good news for you. You're about to save HUNDREDS of DOLLARS.
Please keep reading.
Stain Solver is an oxygen bleach cleaner brand my sweet wife Kathy and I created. Ellen and Roger were also part of the Stain Solver team.
Years ago we were flooded with orders each spring. Customers used Stain Solver to clean their decks, patios, outdoor furniture, etc. The four of us work like dogs labeling bottles, filling them with the magic powder, and answering the phone that never stopped ringing.
I'll never forget the day Ellen threw an empty 2-pound cardboard box across the room at me as I took yet another order over the phone. The UPS truck
was minutes away from showing up, and I promised the woman her Stain Solver would ship that day.
You may not know how Stain Solver came to life. Allow me to share its conception.
Giving Birth to a Brand
I wrote a column in 1994 about deck sealers. I spent hours researching all of the deck sealers I could
find.
One little-known sealer was made just sixty miles away from me in Richmond, Indiana. I was interviewing the owner of the company that made this synthetic-resin deck sealer. I asked him this question during the call:
"Do you recommend using chlorine bleach to clean the deck before using your sealer?"
Chlorine bleach was the
common cleaner everyone said to use to clean outdoor wood. It turns out it's the WORST THING you can use.
This misinformation STILL EXISTS all over the Internet. I share WHY CHLORINE BLEACH IS THE WORST THING TO USE HERE.
The president of the deck sealer replied, "Oh no! You want to use oxygen bleach. Oxygen bleach will not harm the wood like chorine will. It's safe to use around landscaping."
Oxygen Bleach - What the Heck is That?
I had never heard of oxygen bleach! I responded,
"What is that?"
The gentleman said, "Listen, you want to speak with Jef Morgan. He's a chemist at Burlington Chemical. He'll get you up to speed in no time."
I called Jef. It turns out he was going to be near Cincinnati on a sales trip the following week. We had dinner at Montgomery Inn.
Thirty years ago their baby back pork
ribs were succulent. Now they're not so good, in my opinion. Kathy makes far better ribs that are as tender as a newborn's bum. The lean meat falls off the bones. But I digress.
Three hours later, I knew more about oxygen bleach than I did about the Cincinnati Reds! Jef sprinkled amazing information on me like the Genius of Waters gets one wet on a windy day.
Jef sent me a 100-pound bag of pure oxygen bleach and asked me to share it with friends. He wanted me and others to test it.
Within weeks, my friends were BEGGING me for more. They were stunned how well it removed set stains, cleaned wood, got
white clothes WHITE, etc.
Kathy and I decided to start the Stain Solver business.
We operated it for twenty-seven years selling countless TONS of it. For years we packaged it in our basement. The business grew and we had to outsource the manufacturing and fulfillment.
I could share with you why I feel Stain Solver is no more, but
that's not important. You may have your own reasons having been a continuing customer.
