I've talked about using cement paint in past columns. Cement paint is an ancient secret trick that allows you to bond new concrete, stucco, etc. to OLD concrete.
I've
got a short video for you to watch in the above column showing one way to spread cement paint. This little-known product is a construction trade secret shared with me by an old cement mason back in the 1970s.
Vocation vs. Just A Job
I want to share a short story about hope. There's hope that some are devoting their lives to a
profession because they love it, not because they consider what they do just a job.
Several days ago I completed my third consult call with Greg.
He's a young plumber in Oklahoma. Greg's a rare breed.
Many tradespeople treat what they do each day as a job. Talk with Greg and you'd think he just stepped out of a time machine
from the year 1925.
One hundred years ago, most tradespeople treated what they did as a vocation. Many were so proud of their work, they'd sign it.
I uncovered quite a few signatures when I was doing demolition work years ago. I wish I had taken photographs of all the ones left by carpenters, plumbers, and electricians.
My son and I signed and dated a flat 2x4 months ago. It's now hidden by drywall at the bottom of his basement stairs. I wanted to carry on the tradition and give some remodeler a surprise in 50, or so, years.
The person looking at our father/son signatures will be delighted, especially if they discover the time capsule across the room hidden in the cavity above the TV room shelves!
Greg invests in his vocation by purchasing a 15-Minute call from time to time. He reaches out to me for tips about how he can advance faster in his profession. He always has great questions.
I estimate I've saved him about five years of time avoiding mistakes one normally discovers while attending the College of Hard Knocks.
During our recent call I
emphasized that he needs to take some basic business management and finance classes at night school. I also talked about the risk/reward formula. You need to know this to avoid taking jobs that are too risky. Risk can be both physical and financial.
If you know a young person that is entering the trades, and you feel they'd benefit by talking to someone that's walked the walk, then set up a call with me.
The customers Greg will work for as time goes on are going to be so blessed. They'll get the best work from a person that really wants to be the best plumber in the USA.
Two Days in Central KY
In less than two weeks, I'll be in central Kentucky. It's a whirlwind one-day consult job.
