My Son's Basement 

I've not given you an update on my son's basement remodeling job in a while. Two days ago we started to tape the 100 sheets of drywall.

We've been working on the job since the end of May. We can only work on it on Saturdays and some Fridays. The house is only three years old. The entire basement was unfinished when we started. All you saw were four 4-inch steel columns holding up two giant LVL beams. It was a great place to roller blade. 

Here's what it's going to look like in about three months:

It's going to have a bedroom, a huge TV room, a rec room for board games, an old-fashioned speakeasy, and a full bathroom. We've even built a secret storage space in the speakeasy to squirrel away expensive bottles of liquid courage.

The space is being heated with Runtal wall-panel electric heaters. There will be five heaters each one with its own thermostat. My son will be able to heat each room separately. The smart thermostats connect to an app on his phone. He can schedule when the heaters come on and turn off. He can set a program to bring one of the rooms up to temperature so it's toasty warm when he and his friends walk down the basement steps.

The Runtal heaters are the best electric heaters I've seen in my life. They are very easy to install..You'll see a detailed step-by-step installation video in about a month. We put one in two weeks ago to offset the coming cold WX.

Spray Foam Insulation Woes

Years ago I went on record predicting there would be problems with spray foam insulation.

I felt spraying it on the underside of roof sheathing and onto the rafters or trusses was a HUGE mistake.

A roof leak could cause significant damage and go unseen. The foam would inhibit you from inspecting structural members in the roof, in walls, or in crawlspaces.
