Amanda

The Monday before Thanksgiving I was at my local grocery store getting materials for the feast. You probably call them groceries. My guess is you use them to build meals like I used 2x4s, pipe, and concrete to build homes. 

My sweet dear loving Kathy told me she needed whole pecans for the pie she was making for me. Now that it's just the two of us in the house, an entire pecan pie is made for my personal consumption. She doesn't really like it and made a cranberry/chocolate pie to split between herself and my son.

Pecans are nuts. That's an undisputed fact.

This means they should be on the shelf with all the other nuts. 

But no, you and I are supposed to know that pecans are put in the baking aisle. My grandfather, a baker, was sent back to Heaven before I was a glint in the eye of my parents. This is my excuse for being deprived of this invaluable nugget of life experience.

Here's the bakery he and my grandmother owned. It was in Cincinnati, Ohio at the corner of Rohs Avenue and McMillan Street.

I was standing glass-eyed in front of all the other nuts and a husband/wife/son cadre saunter up. The husband asks me, "What are you looking for?"

"Whole pecans. Surely they must be here." I mumbled shaking my head not looking forward to driving another 15 miles to the next closest grocrery store.

"No worries. My wife just went to get them for you. She used to work here."

Seconds later lovely Amanda handed me a bag of whole pecans. 

"Where did you get these?" I was in a state of shock.

"Oh, they're just around the corner in the baking aisle."

I was flabbergasted. Amanda did this enormous act of kindness without being asked. Little did she know how appreciative I was.

"You save me so much time. I was about to drive to another store. Thank you so much. May I give you a hug?"

Amanda's face turned as red as the Seagrave firetrucks just around the corner inside the Meredith, NH firehouse. With little hesitation, she obliged. Her husband had a big smile on his face and the son, from the look on his face, thought he was smack dab in the middle of a Twilight Zone episode.

What's the moral of the story?

If you see someone stuck in the muck of life, SPEAK UP like the husband did. He started the chain reaction. I finished it with a warm hug.

Be like Amanda. Go around the corner without being asked.

Oh, and if you manage a grocery store, for the love of God, put up a sign made with bright yellow paper and black type. Place it about 4-feet high in the center of the nut section:

Pecans are in the Baking Aisle under the chocolate chips that should be in the Candy Aisle.

Clay Pots & Candles

Have you witnessed the hokum on YouTube or ???? about saving HUGE sums of money using clay pots and candles?

If you actually believe this, then you must have not paid attention in high school physics class. It's all about BTUs.

You need to know the heat loss measured in BTUs per hour for the space you're trying to heat. Then you need to have a heat source that can produce that many BTUs, or more, in an hour.

A standard candle produces about 75-100 BTUs per hour. A standard three-bedroom home in the Midwest might have a BTU heat loss of about 80,000 BTUs per hour.
