Chrematophobia and You
Here's a true story that happened several days ago. I've changed the name of the person in case she's a subscriber to this newsletter.
Beatrice reached out to me with a slew of questions about a new roofing project. Here's exactly what she sent to me:
"I have been reading your article, Ask The
Builder, in the CT Hartford Courant for quite awhile now. I kept a few that had to do with roofing.
I'm in the process of getting estimates from different roofing companies. I am looking to have the roof replaced now ( A little over
20 years ) as I plan to have solar panels installed. I did attend a Home Show in Hartford, CT just last weekend. When I asked about the copper strip they stated that that is not done anymore as copper has been added to shingles. Is that true? Clarification from Tim Carter: The copper coating found on 10% of the ceramic granules has been around for decades
but it's purpose is to stop the growth of algae. It's not enough copper to extend the life of the shingles as I discussed in my Roofing Ripoff book.
Many years ago when I had the last roof
put on, a vapor barrier was applied to the plywood and then the asphalt shingles. Is this still the standard? It has been working well on my house . I ask because one of the companies literature mentions leak barrier, roof deck protection, starter strip shingles, lifetime shingles, Cobra attic ventilation and ridge cap shingles. It seems like a LOT of layers to me.
One company stated that they only deal w/ steel roofs, that material is added to the upper side that looks like asphalt
shingles as to deaden any noise from rain. My house was built in 1955 and I feel that steel would be too heavy and probably a nightmare for the solar installers.. Also the asphalt shingles I have have done a good job so far so I don't want to mess with success. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
I do enjoy your articles as they are always very informative.
Thank you for your time and
any insight you can lend me on my questions."

First and foremost, how much time do you
think I'd have to spend typing all the information Bea needs to know?
Second, how many follow-up questions do you think she'll have and how long will that take to deal with?
What do you estimate this project will cost? $5,000, $10,000, $15,000?
Would you invest $115 to get expert advice as you might from a CPA or attorney BEFORE you write a check for $10,000?
Because solar panels are involved, what do you think the ramifications are of making a WRONG decision? NOTE that she said she's read my column for a while so she may
have missed this VERY important column about solar panels.
I developed a
product a few years ago that deals with situations like this. It allows me to TALK WITH YOU about bids on projects and go over ALL OF THE MOVING PARTS in the process.
But Bea declined to take advantage of it deciding she'll just figure it out on her own.
She suffers from the worst form of chrematophobia.
That's the fear of spending SMALL AMOUNTS OF MONEY while not hesitating to spend LARGE sums of money.
Don't make the same mistake Bea did. The odds are in several months she'll be back begging me for help to extricate her from a nightmare that happened with the
roofing job.
My Bid Review Services transform nightmares into sweet dreams.
