Peaches & Eggs Over Easy
Â
Peaches is a subscriber just like you. A few months ago he emailed me mentioning that he would be up peeping leaves the past few days. He picked the best weekend. Understand I didn't know back then if Peaches was a man or woman.
Â
I had told him that if he did show up and wanted to have breakfast, I'd love to meet up. I heard from him on Thursday night and I could only do Friday
morning. We went to a quintessential New Hampshire Diner, Gina's, in Bristol, NH.
Â
You know I had to ask about his name and it turns out his father was named Anthony but back in the 1930s his dad was a champion marble shooter. Remember in Patton's speech in the 1970s movie where he talks about that? I thought it was made up for the movie!
Â
Nope, marbles and mumbly peg were big back then. The slang back then for the word cool was the
word peachy or peaches. That's where the phrase peachy-keen came from.Â
Â
Everyone started calling Anthony Peaches and it stuck. So when he had a son, it was decided to name him Peaches!
Â
Peaches stays young umpiring baseball of all ages including an over-70 league in New Jersey.
Â
If you're traveling through NH, you should give me a heads up. I'd love to meet you too! Here's Peaches and me after breakfast in the Bristol town square with
the mortar from the Civil War ship Orvetta in the background.
