Maggie's Broken Finger

Maggie is a subscriber and lives near me here in NH. I saw her at a home show two weeks ago sporting a green cast on her hand.

She broke her finger while using an extension ladder to remove snow from her roof.

Maggie's a nurse and knew what to do and what not to do once the accident happened.

My job is to try to help you to know what to do and what NOT to do when using an extension ladder so you don't have a cast on your hand or arm.

Extension ladders are crude guillotines. When you lift the upper section up in the air you load it with all sorts of potential energy.

If the upper section DROPS rapidly because you're allowing it to or it slips and your hand, fingers, feet or thumbs are where the moving section is descending, bad bad jujumagumbo can and will happen.

In all the years of me using extension ladders I never had an injury because I was always making sure the ladder was nearly straight up and down and well balanced as I moved the upper section up and down.

Doing this meant that I never had to GRASP THE SIDES of the ladder to hold it while the upper section retracted. Doing that puts your fingers very close to the moving section.

Before I ever started to allow the upper section to come down, I thought long and hard about where my fingers and hands were and got them as far away as possible from the moving section.

Extension ladders have all sorts of other dangers and I could devote an entire issue to ladder safety.
