AsktheBuilder.com News - February 12, 2015

Dear ,

It's been ten days since my kidney stone surgery. All is well!

Without going into too much detail, my NH urologist inserted a scope through my you-don't-want-to-know-where and traveled up the tiny fragile pipe that connects my left kidney to my bladder.

There he found a stricture, a clog, that was blocking the tiny pipe. It was scar tissue from my first procedure back in October. He also discovered a stone fragment at the stricture that other scar tissue was trying to encapsulate.

Using a Star-Wars-like laser, he trimmed away some of the scar tissue to try to open the pipe for good.

A stent, think of it as a temporary pipe, was inserted that stretches from my kidney to my bladder. This allows the kidney to drain.

Guess what? The entire process has been virtually PAIN FREE!

Bottom Line: One way that really works to avoid kidney stones is to just drink an extra liter of water per day. I know all about vinegar, avoiding certain foods, etc.
Prevent Retaining Wall COLLAPSE!

Look at this photo. I took it myself in Cincinnati five weeks ago just before eating a delicious gyro sandwich. I was within three blocks of the hospital where I was born and within two miles of where I grew up.

I want you to guess the decade (examples: 1960's, 1910's, 1780's, etc.) you think this limestone wall was built. The wall is in nearly PERFECT condition.

You can see a LARGER photo by clicking here.

CLICK HERE to submit your guess. If you're clever and do some detective work using the clues I've given you, you'll be able to zero in on the correct decade.

If there are other clever subscribers like you that guess the decade I'm SURE it was built, I'm going to place you in a random lottery and you may be the winner of a nice cute bottle of Stain Solver!

This wall is not leaning or bulging. The mortar may have been tuck pointed over time, but that's normal maintenance.

Just to the right of this wall was another one made from concrete block that was tilting out about 9 inches. #FAILURE!

So WHY is this limestone wall in such good shape?

Why didn't it FAIL?

Books, Music and Ask the Builder

From time to time you may be one asking about music I listen to and books I read.

Right now I'm reading a FASCINATING history book about building the Hoover Dam.

It's captivating. I've been to the dam several times and simply marvel at its size.

I've gotten into a small rut listening to this song.
